Car insurance when you have a foreign driving licence
Your driving licence must be valid in Sweden
Your driving licence must be valid in Sweden when you drive. Driving without a valid licence can affect your insurance.
Your compensation may be reduced and, in serious cases, you may receive no compensation.
Which driving licences are valid in Sweden?
EEA licences: A driving licence issued in an EEA country is valid in Sweden as long as it is valid in the country where it was issued and has not been exchanged for a Swedish driving licence.
Driving licences issued outside the EEA: These are generally valid in Sweden until you have been registered as a resident here for one year. There are exceptions, including driving licences from the United Kingdom and the Faroe Islands.
Some licences may also require a certified translation. See the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) for the full and current rules
Information about driving licences at Transportstyrelsen (in English)
Why do I have to call Folksam to get a accurate quote?
We do not receive information from the Swedish Transport Agency confirming that you hold a foreign driving licence. This can affect the price calculated online. Contact us so that we can calculate the correct price for you.
0771-585 922Choose the right level of car insurance
You can choose between third-party liability insurance (trafikförsäkring), partial cover (halvförsäkring) and comprehensive cover (helförsäkring).
You can also choose Bilförsäkring Stor for more cover.
Third-party liability insurance (trafikförsäkring)
In Sweden, a car that is registered for use must have third-party liability insurance.
It can cover:
- personal injuries to the driver, passengers and other people
- damage that you cause to someone else’s property.
It does not cover damage to your own car. For that you need partial or comprehensive cover.
Partial cover (halvförsäkring)
Partial cover includes third-party liability insurance and additional protection for your car.
It can cover:
- theft and attempted theft
- fire
- windscreen and other glass damage
- mechanical and electrical breakdowns
- towing and recovery
- legal expenses
Partial cover does not include vehicle damage cover (vagnskadeförsäkring) for damage caused by a collision or another sudden external event. For this protection, choose comprehensive cover.
Comprehensive cover (helförsäkring)
Comprehensive cover includes everything covered by third-party liability insurance and partial cover. It also includes vehicle damage cover (vagnskadeförsäkring).
Vehicle damage cover can provide compensation if your car is damaged in:
- a collision
- a single-vehicle accident
- vandalism
- a parking accident
- another sudden external event, such as a falling tree
More cover with Bilförsäkring Stor
Bilförsäkring Stor is our extended car insurance and can be combined with either partial cover or comprehensive cover.
It includes additional benefits such as:
- rental car
- assistance (Folksam assistans)
- interior damage cover
- lost key cover
- misfuelling cover
- lower excess on certain claims
Which level of car insurance should I choose?
A new car with a vehicle damage warranty
New cars often include a vehicle damage warranty (vagnskadegaranti) for the first three years. While the warranty is valid, partial cover together with the warranty may provide protection similar to comprehensive cover. Check when the warranty expires and what it covers before choosing your insurance.
A car without a vehicle damage warranty
Comprehensive cover may be suitable if the vehicle damage warranty has expired and the car still has a high market value. Folksam generally recommends comprehensive cover during the first ten years of a car’s life.
A car with a lower market value
Consider the car’s market value and the cost of the insurance. Comprehensive cover may not be worthwhile if the additional premium is high compared with the value of the car.
If you need your car every day
You can add rental car cover to partial or comprehensive cover. It is included in Bilförsäkring Stor. It can provide compensation for a replacement car if your own car cannot be used following damage covered by the policy.
For extra peace of mind - choose Bilförsäkring Stor
Bilförsäkring Stor includes additional cover and lower excesses for certain claims.

Frequently asked questions
What does car insurance cover?
What your car insurance covers depends on the level of cover you choose. You can choose mandatory third-party liability insurance, partial cover with more protection, or comprehensive cover, which includes everything in third-party liability insurance and partial cover plus vehicle damage cover.
The different levels are explained below. For a clearer overview, see the comparison table and choose the cover that suits your needs.
Third-party liability insurance (trafikförsäkring)
To drive your car on Swedish roads, you must have at least third-party liability insurance. It covers personal injuries to you as the driver, your passengers and other people if an accident occurs.
Partial cover (halvförsäkring)
Partial cover includes the mandatory third-party liability insurance. It also protects your own car against certain types of damage, such as glass, theft and fire damage.
Comprehensive cover (helförsäkring)
Comprehensive cover includes third-party liability insurance and partial cover. It also includes vehicle damage cover for damage to your car caused by a collision or another external event.
What is the difference between partial cover and comprehensive cover?
Partial cover (halvförsäkring) includes third-party liability insurance and cover for events such as theft, fire, glass damage, mechanical and electrical breakdown, roadside recovery and legal expenses.
Comprehensive cover (helförsäkring) includes everything in partial cover, plus vehicle damage cover for damage to your car caused by a collision, vandalism or another sudden external event.
Why do I need at least third-party liability insurance?
In Sweden, a car that is registered for use must normally have third-party liability insurance. The insurance must apply from the day you become the registered owner. If the car is notified as off road and is not used, the insurance requirement normally does not apply.
If a car that must be insured has no third-party liability insurance, the owner may have to pay a daily fee to the Swedish Motor Insurers (Trafikförsäkringsföreningen). The fee is much higher than a standard insurance premium.
What is roadside assistance?
Roadside assistance, called Folksam Assistans in our car insurance, is optional cover that provides help if your car breaks down and you are stranded. You can add it to partial or comprehensive cover,, and it is included in Bilförsäkring Stor. You can use assistance on three occasions per policy year with no excess.
How does laid-up car insurance (avställningsförsäkring) work?
If you register your car as off road (avställd) in the Swedish Road Traffic Registry (Transportstyrelsen), you do not need third-party liability insurance while the car remains off road and is not used. If you have partial or comprehensive cover with us, the insurance is changed to laid-up car insurance automatically.
Laid-up car insurance applies in Sweden and includes cover for events such as theft, fire and glass damage. Vehicle damage cover is also included, but not for damage caused by a traffic accident while the car is off road.
What is classic car insurance (veteranbilsförsäkring)?
Classic car insurance (veteranbilsförsäkring), also called enthusiast vehicle insurance, is designed for owners of classic cars. Your car must meet certain criteria before you can arrange this insurance.
You must be a member of a collector car club that works with MHRF. The car must be classified as a classic car, which in this context means that it is more than 20 years old.
MHRF offers classic vehicle insurance called Samlarfordon together with Folksam.
Read more about classic car insurance at MHRF (in Swedish)
How do I switch my car insurance?
If you change the level of cover, for example from partial to comprehensive cover, contact us and the new level can apply from the same day. If you change car, tell the insurance company. You can do this at any time during the policy year. You can normally change insurance company only on the main renewal date (huvudförfallodag) shown in your policy document. Arrange insurance with the new company and then contact your current company to cancel the existing policy.
Where can I find information about other Folksam insurance?
You can find an overview of our insurance and savings options in English, including insurance for your home, family, pets and other vehicles.
Buying a car?
What do I need to do after buying a car from a private seller?
You and the seller must report the change of ownership to the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen). Your car insurance must apply from the day you become the registered owner. Otherwise you will have to pay a daily fee to the Swedish Motor Insurers (Trafikförsäkringsföreningen).
For the insurance to apply, the policyholder and the registered owner of the car must be the same person. You can report a change of ownership digitally on the Swedish Transport Agency.
Read more at Transportstyrelsen about change of ownership (in English)
What happens when I buy a car from a dealer?
When you buy a car from a dealer, the dealer helps with the change of ownership and may also arrange car insurance for you at the dealership. Many dealers work with Folksam and can offer introductory insurance so that you are insured when you drive away. This includes cars bought from our partner Riddermark Bil.
We offer brand-specific insurance for Mazda, Hyundai and Honda. Authorised dealers may offer special terms for these policies.
I want to import a car from another country. What do I need to do?
The requirements depend on whether you are importing the car from an EU country or from a country such as the United States or Canada.
The Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) provides information and guidance on what you need to do.
Importing and registering a vehicle in Sweden – Swedish Transport Agency (in English)
I have sold my car. How do I cancel the insurance?
You do not need to cancel the insurance when you sell your car. When the change of ownership is registered with the Swedish Transport Agency, we receive a notification.
We end the car insurance from the date you signed the ownership transfer documents.
How much does a car insurance cost?
How is the price of car insurance calculated?
When calculating the price of your car insurance, we consider factors such as where you live, the car you drive, its age and model, and how far it will be driven each year. The price also depends on the level of cover you choose.
If you have a foreign driving licence, you need to call us so that we can calculate the correct price. We do not receive confirmation from the Swedish Transport Agency that you hold a foreign licence, which can otherwise result in a higher insurance price.
How does annual mileage affect car insurance?
Annual mileage can affect the price and terms of your insurance. Contact us to change your annual mileage if you expect to drive more or less than estimated.
0771-585 922Can I get an additional discount for an electric car?
We have reduced the insurance price for many fully electric cars. You may also receive a 10% multi-policy discount if you have home insurance with Folksam. If you choose a car on our list of recommended new cars, you may receive an additional 10% discount for a safe and environmentally friendly car.

What applies to different types of damage?
I have a stone chip in my windscreen. What should I do?
If your windscreen has a stone chip or crack, have it repaired as soon as possible before the crack grows and the whole windscreen needs to be replaced.
There is no excess for repairing the windscreen. If the windscreen must be replaced, the standard excess applies.
Book the repair directly with Ryds Bilglas or Carglass. If neither company operates in your area, use the link below to find a nearby repairer. You do not need to report the claim to us.
Find your nearest approved repairer (in Swedish)
My car was deliberately damaged by someone else. What excess do I pay?
If your Bilförsäkring includes optional vehicle damage cover, you pay only half of your own-damage excess and we pay the rest. If your Bilförsäkring does not include optional vehicle damage cover but the car still has a valid vehicle damage warranty, we pay the part of the excess above SEK 3,500.
What should I do if I collide with an animal?
If you collide with certain wild animals, you must report the collision to the police by calling 112 and mark the place where it happened. This applies, for example, to collisions with moose, deer, roe deer and wild boar. You must also report a collision with a reindeer. You can read more at SOS Alarm.
If the animal leaves the scene, mark the side of the road where it disappeared. Do not follow or track an injured animal yourself. See SOS Alarm's website for the full list of animals covered by the reporting requirement.

Can I receive compensation for a lost car key?
If you have Bilförsäkring Stor and lose the ignition key or central-locking remote control, you may receive compensation for the lost key.
What does the insurance cover if an electric car causes a fire or short circuit?
If your electric car causes a fire or short circuit, damage to the building may be covered by your building insurance (villaförsäkring). Damage to the car and its accessories should instead be reported under your car insurance.
How does the insurance work?
Does car insurance apply when I drive in Europe?
Our car insurance applies in EEA countries and in other countries that are part of the Green Card system. In some countries, you need to carry a Green Card as proof of insurance.
Read more about the Green Card – proof of motor insurance for your car (in Swedish)Does car insurance apply during supervised driving practice?
For the car insurance to apply, both the learner driver and the supervisor must meet the Swedish Transport Agency’s requirements and rules for supervised driving practice.
The car insurance then applies in the same way as when the car is driven by someone with a valid driving licence.
The supervisor has full responsibility during the driving practice and is regarded as the driver.
What happens if I don't insure my car?
If your car is registered for use, it must atleast have third-party liability insurance even if you are not driving it. If the car is uninsured, the Swedish Motor Insurers (TFF) will charge you a daily motor third-party liability insurance fee. The cost of this is much higher than what you'd pay for car insurance.
Terms and important information
